Matthew Picton

Matthew Picton was one of the big hits of the show, but that is what happens when you pull off a 30-foot wide installation that competes with exciting views of Portland’s Bridges and downtown. His Cracked Driveway Drawing #11, an acrylic casting of a large crack in the asphalt evoked everything from salmon eggs to veins of gold hanging in space after all the surrounding rock has been removed. The complex fractal shapes from found objects evoke Duchamp's ready-mades, Pollock’s skeins of paint as well as the “in this together” situation between man and nature. This symbiosis found in Picton’s work belies a 21st century awareness of aggregate and cumulatively complex cause and effect reality.
