Harrell Fletcher’s video Hello There Friend, NE Portland 2002 With Jeff Hilliard is a revelation of the everyday but wondrous nick-knacks that Mr. Hilliard collects. On a purely formal level these glimpses work as “theater” photography as the various opening hands act similarly to stage curtains being drawn back. The subject matter of this work is typical of Fletcher who often lets the details and private preoccupations of others to determine content. In many ways it can be compared to cultural anthropology or the history of the now that often goes unsung.
